What do we wear?
Consider the colors of your surroundings... if it's fall, then fall colors would look great! Basically, you want everyone to somewhat match in style and color. Don't have one family member dress casual when all the others are dressing formally. Likewise, don't have one family member wear bright orange with the others in muted blues...
How about wearing white?
I really don't recommend wearing white for the following reason. White is a high contrast color and it takes away from the faces in the photos. White just gets more attention. We want the attention directed to the faces of the persons in the portrait.
The exception to this is a light background, such as a high key studio or a white theme living room, with white clothes. A high key family photograph. Here, the faces stand out well against the white/light surroundings.
